I have been a newborn photographer for 13 years. I am a master photographer, I am a certified professional photographer, I have been trained in newborn safety and I have also photographed hundreds of newborns. I am here to help you on your journey to finding the right photographer to hire to capture your little ones' precious first days of life. If you are a photographer I am here to hopefully help you not hurt a baby or get sued.
What you see on the internet is not necessarily the "truth"... Or at least it shouldn't be...
There are things that you should never do and I am here to offer some advice.
Never worry a parent when handling their little one, Never hang a baby in an object, Never put a baby in a glass prop, Never pose a position that you would not or could not do yourself, and always remember that if a child may get hurt it is NOT WORTH THE "SHOT"! Remember that you are photographing and handling a human life.
Here is a list of "Do's". Do have a spotter at all times when using a prop, Do try to pose in a pose yourself before trying to have a baby do the pose to be sure it does not hurt, Do always wear a camera strap so as to not drop your heavy camera on the precious newborn, and Do keep the baby safe at all times.
Remember that a lot of images that you see on the internet are not "real". A lot of them are photoshopped as they should be. .
Knowing how images are created can be very helpful. Below I have posted an after picture and a before. This image was created using two images. One is holding the baby's head and the other would be holding the body. The images are then combined by compositing them in Photoshop. There is not one moment where the baby was let go of so as to keep this little sweetie safe.
There are a lot of factors involved in keeping a baby safe. Through my training, I have learned how the human body works as well as how to understand and read a newborn's expressions and movements to know if they are unhappy or happy in a pose.
A great photographer will speak loudly about the importance of newborn safety. If it is important to a photographer they will tell you how the poses are done so you will understand how important it is to them which is why I am writing this blog. If you hire a photographer and you do not feel that your child is safe please collect your child and leave. Do not let your child be at risk of getting injured.
